How We Displayed 56 Pairs of Eyewear in 0.2 m²: A Custom 360° Rotating Acrylic Eyewear Display Tower

The Client Did Not Simply Need Another Display Rack

The client was a growing optical retail chain operating in Southeast Asia. As its sunglasses, optical frames and co-branded collections continued to expand, its existing wall-mounted displays could no longer keep pace with the number of new SKUs entering each store.

Floor space was limited in several locations. Adding more cabinets would reduce the area available for customer circulation and frame fitting. Placing products closer together would increase capacity, but it would also make the display look crowded and reduce the visual value of each frame.

The client therefore needed a different retail display format: one that could hold more products without taking up substantially more floor space, allow shoppers to browse from several directions and maintain a consistent brand presentation across multiple stores.

The original request sounded straightforward: develop a transparent, high-capacity, floor-standing eyewear display with a smooth rotating function and a branded header at the top.

However, a nearly two-metre-tall rotating display is not simply a collection of clear panels, circular shelves and a turntable.

Its centre of gravity must be controlled. The rotating mechanism must remain smooth after repeated daily use. Large transparent surfaces reveal every glue mark, chipped edge and scratch under retail lighting. Most importantly, a prototype that looks good in a meeting room is not enough. Hundreds of production units must deliver the same appearance, stability and operating feel.

This project was therefore not about copying a reference image. It was about converting a retail display concept into a repeatable product that could be manufactured, packed, shipped, installed and used across an entire store network.

Three Problems Behind the Project: Limited Capacity, Restricted Viewing and Inconsistent Rollout

Limited display capacity as the SKU count increased

The client’s existing stores mainly used fixed wall racks and compact countertop displays. Wall-mounted fixtures offered only one active viewing face, while countertop units were flexible but limited in capacity.

As the product range grew, stores had two common options: add more fixtures or reduce the distance between individual frames. The first option required more retail space. The second produced a dense wall of products in which individual frame designs became harder to distinguish.

Eyewear needs room to be seen, picked up and tried on. When display density becomes excessive, even a well-designed frame loses its identity.

The target for the new fixture was to display approximately 56 pairs of eyewear within a footprint of around 0.2 m², while preserving enough visual separation between collections. The objective was not to force the maximum possible number of products onto one structure. It was to balance capacity, viewing distance and ease of access.

A fixed fixture restricted the customer journey

A wall display requires shoppers to move along a single surface. During busy periods, several customers may gather in front of the same section, making it harder to browse and increasing the amount of rearranging required from store staff.

The client wanted the new fixture to work in an entrance zone or central retail area, where shoppers could approach it from any direction. With a controlled push, the display would rotate and bring different styles and shelf levels into view.

The rotating function was not added as a visual gimmick. It was designed to improve the browsing path. Instead of making customers walk around a fixed fixture, the fixture brings the products to the customer. A single active face becomes four usable viewing directions.

A successful prototype did not guarantee a successful store rollout

The client had previously purchased similar display fixtures. The first samples looked acceptable, but the mass-produced units showed inconsistent rotation, slight movement at the base and uneven finishing along clear acrylic edges. Some stores could use the fixtures immediately, while others had to make adjustments after delivery.

For a retail chain, that uncertainty creates more cost than a small difference in unit price.

A visual merchandising concept approved by headquarters must look consistent in every location. Delivery timing, shelf positions, rotating resistance, logo placement and installation procedures all need to follow the same standard.

The client did not merely need a display that could rotate. It needed a standardised merchandising system that could be deployed across 38 stores and assembled by regular retail staff without on-site support from the factory.

The Final Product: A 360° Rotating Acrylic Eyewear Display Tower

Based on the available floor space and target display capacity, we developed the 360° rotating acrylic eyewear display tower shown in the project images.

The illustrative overall dimensions were 450 × 450 × 1,900 mm. The design combined a black box-style base, a central supporting column, seven clear circular display levels, transparent vertical panels and a four-sided branded header.

The most direct benefit of this structure was the conversion of horizontal display space into vertical merchandising capacity.

Each of the seven circular levels was planned to hold approximately eight pairs of eyewear, providing an overall capacity of around 56 pairs per tower. Individual levels could be assigned to new arrivals, core collections, men’s or women’s ranges, different price bands or promotional themes.

A shopper standing near the display could rotate the tower gently and browse several collections without moving along an entire wall.

Clear acrylic reduced the visual weight of the fixture. Retail lighting could pass through the structure, allowing the eyewear to remain the focal point instead of being visually dominated by heavy panels or cabinets.

The upper branded section provided long-distance recognition before a customer reached the product. The black base created contrast with the transparent tower and gave the display a stronger visual anchor within the store.

This was not simply a rack with more shelves. It converted the same piece of floor space into four active viewing directions and increased the exposure generated by each square metre of retail space.

Dimensions, Acrylic Thickness and Structural Direction

For this illustrative version, the display measured 450 × 450 × 1,900 mm. The transparent outer body used 8 mm clear cast acrylic, while the circular product shelves used 10 mm clear cast acrylic. Depending on the final structure, the upper branding section used 5–8 mm material.

The black base housed the rotating and fixing components. Its supporting structure and internal weight distribution were designed to keep the centre of gravity low enough for normal retail use.

There is a common misconception in custom acrylic manufacturing: thinner material is not automatically more economical, and thicker material is not automatically more professional.

On a display close to two metres high, every customer interaction transfers force through the shelves, central column and base. If the material is reduced without considering rigidity, the fixture may appear acceptable while standing still but develop movement, noise or fatigue around connection points during long-term use.

Excessive thickness creates a different set of problems. It increases total weight, rotational inertia, packing volume and freight cost. It can also make a display intended to look transparent and lightweight appear visually heavy.

The correct approach is to assign material according to function. Product-bearing areas require sufficient rigidity. Transparent outer sections must balance stability with visual openness. The base must support the complete structure and control its centre of gravity. The rotating system must provide a predictable operating feel.

Dimensions and material thickness should serve the retail application rather than being compared in isolation on a quotation sheet.

We recommend clear acrylic suitable for precision machining rather than low-cost sheet with an uncertain recycled content. An eyewear fixture remains under store lighting for long periods. Inclusions, colour variation, yellowing, cloudy edges and stress cracking can become highly visible.

Lower-grade sheet may pass an initial factory inspection but still create problems during transport, installation or extended use. Good material cannot compensate for poor engineering, but poor material will always limit the quality and service life of the finished display.

Process Control Focused on Clarity, Stability and Batch Consistency

The product required CNC cutting, drilling, edge polishing, acrylic bonding, branded graphic production, base assembly and rotation testing.

Rather than turning the case study into a list of manufacturing terminology, we organised production around three outcomes:

The transparent components had to remain visually clean.
The rotating structure had to remain stable and controlled.
All 260 production units had to follow the approved sample.

The circular display levels were among the most sensitive parts of the structure. Small cumulative differences in centre position, hole placement or shelf spacing could make the tower appear misaligned. Any offset would become even more obvious while the display was rotating.

Batch production therefore required a shared drawing standard and consistent machining references. Assembly positioning also had to be controlled rather than left to individual judgement.

The premium appearance of acrylic does not come from describing it as “crystal clear.” It comes from clean surfaces, polished edges and neat joints that remain convincing under close inspection.

White cutting marks, chipped holes, excessive adhesive and residual protective-film marks are all magnified by retail lighting. A transparent fixture offers very little room to hide poor workmanship. The quality of the process becomes part of the customer’s brand presentation.

The rotating mechanism required the same discipline. If the resistance was too low, a light touch could move the display beyond the product the shopper wanted to view. If it was too high, the shopper would apply more force and create greater movement through the tower.

The target was not maximum speed. It was controlled performance: smooth starting, even movement and a predictable stop when the display was fully loaded.

That operating feel had to be approved during sampling and reproduced during mass production. It could not depend on which assembler happened to adjust each unit.

Three Prototype Rounds: From Feasible to Retail-Ready and Production-Ready

The illustrative development process involved three prototype rounds.

Prototype 1: Proving the overall concept

The first sample established the overall proportions, number of display levels, branded header position and base format.

The visual direction was largely correct, but a fully loaded test showed slight movement at the upper section. The spacing between some levels also made larger sunglasses less convenient to remove.

Prototype 2: Improving real in-store usability

For the second sample, we adjusted the base-stability direction, redistributed the vertical spacing and refined the rotating resistance.

The client placed the sample in a simulated store environment and asked retail staff to assess restocking, product handling, cleaning and daily organisation.

This stage revealed issues that rarely appear in a rendering. Certain shelf positions were less convenient to access, some areas were harder to clean and specific product labels could be partially obscured from particular viewing angles.

Prototype 3: Preparing the design for mass production

After the structure and visual direction were confirmed, the third sample focused on assembly efficiency, packing volume and installation at the destination.

Producing one attractive prototype only proves that a concept is technically possible. Producing 260 consistent units and allowing different stores to restore the same approved presentation proves that the solution is commercially ready.

The three prototype rounds did not represent repeated redesign. Each round closed a different category of risk: the first confirmed the direction, the second confirmed the retail experience and the third confirmed production feasibility.

Mass-Producing 260 Units in 32 Days

After prototype approval, the client placed an initial order for 260 units for deployment across 38 stores.

The illustrative mass-production lead time was 32 days, covering material preparation, acrylic machining, base production, branded component confirmation, assembly testing, packing and outgoing inspection.

Before production began, the approved sample became the master reference. Transparent-part positions, shelf spacing, rotating resistance, base appearance and brand placement were all compared against that standard. This prevented individual departments from interpreting the design differently.

Production was organised in controlled batches instead of waiting for every component to be completed before final assembly. If a problem appeared, it could be corrected within a smaller batch rather than being carried through the entire order.

Three areas received particular attention.

Appearance consistency: Scratches, cloudy edges, adhesive marks and colour variation on the black base had to be found before packing.

Structural consistency: Shelf positions, tower alignment and the base connection had to remain in line with the approved sample.

Functional consistency: Every finished display received a basic rotation check before packing to identify obvious resistance points, noise or visible runout.

The client was not buying 260 separate craft projects. It was buying 260 retail fixtures manufactured to one standard. The factory’s job was to convert the approved prototype into a repeatable production specification so that unit 260 remained consistent with unit one.

A Semi-Knock-Down Packing Solution for International Delivery

Finishing the product in the factory completed only half of the delivery task.

Large acrylic displays typically face three transport risks: surface abrasion, edge impact and structural stress caused by movement inside the carton. International shipments add repeated truck loading, warehouse handling, container loading, unloading and last-mile delivery. One uncontrolled handling event can damage work completed across several manufacturing stages.

For this illustrative project, we used a semi-knock-down packing solution.

The main transparent body and base retained the necessary pre-assembled relationship. Circular shelves, the upper branding components and other impact-sensitive parts were secured separately. Protective film remained on the clear acrylic surfaces. EPE foam separated contact areas, corner protectors reinforced vulnerable edges, and labelled hardware packs simplified installation. Internal restraints prevented components from moving freely inside the outer carton.

We did not pack the entire 1,900 mm tower as one fully assembled unit. A tall complete structure would create excessive shipping volume and act as a long lever inside the carton, transferring side impacts into its connection points.

We also avoided shipping every component completely flat-packed. Retail stores are not specialist assembly sites. Too many loose parts increase the risk of incorrect assembly, missing hardware and accidental scratching.

The semi-knock-down format balanced transport protection with installation efficiency. Each unit included illustrated instructions so store staff could position the base, connect the main body, install the shelves and refit the branded header without requiring a factory technician.

For a multi-store retail programme, effective packing is not only about reducing the damage rate. It also reduces the hidden cost of coordinating installation across many locations.

Project Results: 260 Units, 38 Stores and a 180-Unit Repeat Order

In this illustrative project scenario, all 260 display towers were completed within the planned 32-day production period and shipped in batches according to the client’s store rollout schedule.

The displays were deployed across 38 retail locations.

Arrival feedback indicated that two units had minor damage to replaceable clear components. No main structure failed. Based on complete units, the affected proportion was approximately 0.77%.

After receiving the report, the factory supplied replacement parts and strengthened the internal restraints around the vulnerable areas for the next production batch.

There is no need to turn every case study into a claim of “zero damage.” Large display fixtures pass through multiple handling points, and a small number of transport incidents does not automatically mean that a project failed.

The more meaningful questions are whether the cause can be identified, whether damaged parts can be replaced quickly, whether the response protects the store opening schedule and whether the next shipment includes a verified improvement.

Following the initial rollout, the towers were mainly used near store entrances, in concentrated sunglasses zones and in promotional areas. Compared with the original fixed displays, the new fixture allowed shoppers to approach from four directions while holding approximately 56 pairs of eyewear with clear separation between collections.

Stores did not need to add more wall cabinets, and customers were less likely to gather in front of a single active display face during busy periods.

Based on additional store openings and display-renewal plans, the client subsequently placed a repeat order for 180 units.

A repeat order does not prove that every detail was perfect. It does show that the product direction, delivery capability and problem-resolution process gave the client enough confidence to continue the programme. In a B2B custom project, that carries more weight than a generic statement that “the customer was very satisfied.”

Factory Review: The Real Product Was Rollout Certainty

On the surface, this rotating acrylic eyewear tower solved the question of how to display more glasses. From a retail-operations perspective, it addressed four larger issues:

Product exposure per square metre
Customer browsing flow
Brand consistency across locations
Repeatable deployment across a store network

Clear acrylic allowed the structure to recede behind the merchandise. The multi-level circular arrangement increased the use of vertical space. The 360° rotation turned four directions into active viewing areas. The upper header created long-distance brand recognition, while the base provided stability and support.

After two decades of working with acrylic fabrication, we have seen many display products that look similar in photographs but perform very differently in real stores.

The difference is not limited to sheet thickness. It appears in areas that are difficult to capture in a product image: whether the rotation remains controlled, whether the edges withstand close inspection, whether batch dimensions remain consistent, whether the packing survives international handling and whether damaged parts can be replaced quickly.

The client’s greatest risk is rarely a slightly higher unit price. The greater risk is discovering after delivery that hundreds of fixtures cannot be used as planned. At that stage, the loss includes more than rework. It affects store-opening schedules, promotional campaigns, retail labour and brand presentation.

For that reason, we do not recommend reducing sheet quality, base stability or packing protection simply to win a price comparison. Savings made on the purchase order can return several times over as delays, replacements and after-sales costs.

The value of this project was not that we had produced another rotating display. It was that we converted a broad merchandising request into a series of solvable manufacturing questions:

How many pairs of eyewear needed to be displayed?
How much floor space was available?
How should customers browse the products?
How would the brand be recognised from a distance?
How could 38 stores achieve the same presentation?
How could the product reach each location without losing its finish or stability?

Once those questions were resolved, the tower stopped being an isolated acrylic product and became a repeatable module within the client’s retail system.

What Eyewear Brands and Retail Buyers Should Prepare Before Requesting a Quote

If you are planning a similar rotating display, do not begin with only a reference image and the question, “How much is one unit?”

Prepare these six pieces of information first:

The number of eyewear styles to be displayed
The intended position inside the store
The available footprint and maximum height
Whether 360° rotation is required
The number of stores in the rollout
The expected shipping method and destination

These details directly affect the number of shelves, vertical spacing, base structure, acrylic specification, packing method and total project cost.

The clearer the application requirements are, the fewer unnecessary prototype revisions the project will need and the lower the mass-production risk will be.
